Research area

Stefan works on improving the sensor setup of ETH's concrete 3D printing procedure by implementing a camera on the printing nozzle. From the obtained images he wants to extract data regarding material properties and general state of the print. This data will be used to document the manufacturing procedure of 3D printed elements and will be synthesized in a data-enriched digital twin. In a next step, he plans to develop an "inspection method of the future" which will be based on augmented reality. An inspector assessing stability and durability of a concrete 3D printed structure will use an AR-headset to access the manufacturing data from the digital twin. This way he/she gains insights into otherwise hidden details of the past of a structure, therefore making an inspection well-founded and also faster.

Stefan studied mechanical engineering at ETH Zürich with a focus on computer vision, image analysis and machine learning. He started his PhD at the lab of physical chemistry of building materials in autumn 2024.
