Complex Systems and Materials Group

Welcome to the group pages of the Complex Systems and Materials group, led by Dr. Falk Wittel, senior scientist and lecturer at the Institute of Building Materials.

We love challenging materials like wood, concrete, or granular matter, challenging systems like growing or collapsing structures, or bio-sensors,  and the numerical challenges that have to be overcome to study structure-property relations, fracture and fragmentation, morphogenesis, or mechano-transduction in these materials and systems. As an engineering group, we aim at bridging fundamental research with applied problems.  We are not focused on a specific material, but understand systems behaviour in a more general and abstract manner. We always use the most suitable numerical method, tailored and extended for the unsolved scientific question, but have a strong expertise on Discrete Element Methods and constitutive modeling.
