Chemistry for Civil Engineers
Chemistry is an important fundamental topic for civil engineers, e.g. in understanding the properties of building materials, the natural environment (atmosphere and solutions) and the reaction of building materials with the environment (corrosion of metals, durability). The course intends to teach the fundamentals of chemistry (see table of contents) with a focus on these applied topics.
This course is taught using a flipped classroom approach. This means that students are expected to prepare for the class by watching each week a couple of videos explaining core chemistry concepts. During class, the topics introduced by the videos are discussed in more depth and the students are asked to apply their knowledge for solving problems in groups. During the in-class assignments, the teaching staff assists the students, providing orientation and answering questions.
Examples of the videos used in this course can be found on our external page Youtube channel and on the external page Fuseschool youtube channel.
The course is hosted on Moodle, where the students can find the preparation videos and other learning material (e.g. lecture notes, quizzes, infographics, articles).
