Ena Lloret-Fritschi is a postdoc in a bridge position between the group of Gramazio Kohler Research (GKR) and group of Physical Chemistry of Building Materials (PCBM). Currently she coordinates and researches on “Mouldless Shaping of Concrete”, embedded within the Digital Fabrication, NCCR, ETH. 

Ena Lloret-Fritschi obtained her PhD in June 2016 under the supervision of Fabio Gramazio, Matthias Kohler and Robert Flatt within the department of Architecture (D-Arch), with a thesis entitled “Smart Dynamic Casting: A digital fabrication method for non-standard concrete Structures”. In 2012 Smart Dynamic Casting received the Concrete Innovation Award at the Concrete Innovation Conference in Oslo and was amongst the 5 finalist for the SPARK award at the ETH Zurich.

Before joining the ETH in September 2010, Ena Lloret-Fritschi joined Master in Architecture at the Design Research laboratory (DRL) at the Architectural Association in London. The study resulted in a successful master thesis project under the name “Fluid Cast”. A project which marked the start of her interest in using digital fabrication to shape initial fluid materials without a formwork.

Prior her academic career Ena Lloret-Fritschi gained several years of professional experience in as an architect in practice at OMA, Holland, Allmann Sattler Wappner, Germany and Dietrict Untertrifaller and Querkraft in Austria. Her role included project leader for several architectural competitions and planning projects. 

Eggshell

Eggshell is a novel fabrication process for the creation of non-standard, reinforced concrete structures. The process exploits the controlled hydration of concrete as developed in Smart Dynamic Casting.

Smart Dynamic Casting Prefabrication

Smart Dynamic Casting (SDC) is a continuous robotic slipforming process that enables to prefabricate material optimized load-bearing concrete structures. In this automated process a dynamic formwork significantly smaller than the structures produced is continuously moved and filled with concrete, in a velocity that enables to shape the concrete in the delicate phase when it changes from a soft to a hard material.

Smart Dynamic Casting specifically aims at removing the need of individual made formwork for the construction of complex concrete structures.
